Work from 2013
Once you understand it’s rules, clay is a wonderful medium to work with. It can be quickly and easily molded into nearly any shape. When fired, it becomes rock hard, giving it ageless durability. The materials used in the ceramic process are elements of the earth. This gives the piece a natural feel and offers a finish of muted earth tones. These characteristics appeal to my artistic sensitivities and provide expressive freedom.
Developing a piece is an iterative process. It starts by quickly building a small version. I set this piece out and evaluate it as I live with it. I naturally start thinking about fixing the flaws and finishing out the design. Second iteration, build larger, evaluate flaws, tweak design, repeat. To develop shape, I create plaster and bisque molds, sometimes using natural objects. I fire to cone ten and use B-Mix clay. Ceramics can be technically challenging. Like a puzzle, I enjoy the problem solving involved. - Rob
