Our pottery class will help each student on the pottery wheel or with hand building to advance your pottery skills. Pottery forms often follow function; to fit the hand or pour a certain liquid. In this class you’re the artist, so form and surface decoration may come first. Express yourself! You may decorate the surface with carvings, slips and glazes to make every piece unique. Pieces created in class will be fired as part of the class. Students may wish to bring clay tools, apron, hand towels, plastic bags, notebook and pencil. Price of class includes open studio time on Saturday mornings
Wheel Throwing / Hand Building
Wheel throwing is fun but can be a challenge. The hand building process is easy, but can also be tricky. Moisture level of the clay plays an important role. Care must be given to attach the parts correctly. We focus on giving an understanding of the fundamentals required to make your piece successful. Our pottery classes are loosely structured and follow an open format. This is the simplest way to take into account the students interests. For hand building, usually start with a slab and use one of our many of hump, slump or press molds. After we explain some of the possibilities, we open the direction up to the student and provide guidance along the way. Clay is a versatile medium to sculpt with. Hand building pottery includes many different techniques for manipulating the clay.
Thursday Evening Class
We teach both wheel throwing and hand building in our evening class. All levels, beginner to advanced. Classes are six weeks long with makeup class at the end. Includes 12 pounds of clay.
One additional 25 pound block of clay may be purchased per class. The cost of this clay is $38 and must be purchased from LampLight Studio. The price of clay includes use of studio tools, glazing and firing. Please bring a towel to dry your hands.
